El Tigre Update

McQueen’s is in the midst of a complete “top to bottom, inside and out” refit of the Monk designed El Tigre, built in 1979 by Ted Elliot in Southern California.  El Tigre is a 65 foot wooden sports fisher with a long and storied history. The project started with the removal of all of the loose furnishings, allowing the opening up of the engine room overhead hatch to allow removal of all of the machinery.  All of the flooring, headliner, wallcoverings and upholstery were removed or discarded and a complete interior refinish started.  The galley and salon ended up being removed and a new arrangement is being built to replace it.  Jon Pokela of  Pokela Design in Gig Harbor,
Washington was retained to redo the galley and salon and select all new soft goods and coverings for the interior.  His job grew to entail designing of the new “up/down and sliding salon table, a new pilot house table, and lighting throughout the boat. The project will end up being like a brand new boat, with all new appliances, flooring, granite countertops, cabinets, overhead and wall fabrics, and upholstery.
The exterior has been sanded down and made fair, using International Paints fairing system, primers and Perfection top coats.
New Caterpillar engines with more horsepower than what the boat used to have, meant we had the need to increase shaft size from the existing 2 *” shafts to new running gear complete with 3 *” shafts. The old Northern Lights gensets were replaced with brand new Northern Lights 25 KW gensets.  All of the tanks, and machinery have been replaced with brand new, upgraded equipment.
All of the electrical and electronics will be replaced with new equipment as well.  The entire electronics package will be supplied by Long Beach Marine Electronics, and the electrical will be done by McQueen’s staff. McQueen’s anticipates completion in April of 2007, with sea trials being done in local waters. El Tigre is just one of many major refits that McQueen’s has undertaken, and management and staff at McQueen’s are very happy to have the opportunity to bring a yacht with such a great history back to “as new” condition for her
owners.
